(Undated) -- Vermont is a step closer to a law that would call for mandatory labeling of all genetically modified foods. The state senate passed a bill yesterday that would require foods containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, to be labeled as having been produced with "genetic engineering." Consumer groups have been calling for labels because there are questions about the effects of genetically modified crops on people and the environment. If the bill is signed into law, Vermont would be the first state to require GMO labeling.
