(Honolulu, HI) -- The U.S. Navy is assuring state lawmakers the drinking water in the Red Hill area near Pearl Harbor is safe despite a fuel leak in January. It's estimated more than 20-thousand gallons of fuel leaked from one of the Navy's fuel tanks. Officials said at a hearing Friday that tests show the fuel did not get into drinking water wells. A Navy official said the 70-year-old tanks undergo thorough maintenance and upgrades. The Navy will continue working wit the state health department and Board of Water Supply to ensure the drinking water is safe.
