(Kauai, HI) -- Kauai Fire Department officials want more money to pay firefighters overtime. The "Garden Island" reports the department is asking for a 22 percent increase in overtime funds for the coming fiscal year. The department spent over one-point-one-million dollars on overtime during the last fiscal year. Fire officials say the increase is needed in part to make sure the department is complying with collective bargaining agreements with its rank and file. Fire officials say some overtime costs are inevitable, pointing to last week's large-scale rescue of 121 stranded hikers at Hanakaipai.
